Owl Carrot Cake

I found this adorable idea on the web. Just use Google Images and search "owl cake" and you'll see what I mean. I can credit the person, but several people have done something like this, so whoooo is the original designer? The first lady on Flikr, the second one? This person? I don't know, but thank you !

Sidebar: That's the thing about cake decorating, that even my teacher said; Nothing is really an original design. Everyone "borrows" from everyone else. I won't say "steal" because we're a sharing community of decorators. If you're a stingy decorator that doesn't want to share, then boooo to you.

Isabel and I created the pieces using fondant and gum paste and let them harden a bit overnight.

The next night I shredded some carrots and got to work on the carrot cake. While they cooled, we (Isabel and I) made the homemade cream cheese icing, and lightened it with a small touch of sky blue gel food coloring.

The cake was iced, the pieces placed, some gum paste trees and flowers made (real easy as I already had the fondant colored from the night before) and here it is.

Mmmm. Carrot cake is my favorite.

Football Cookies

Yes, I know this blog is called Kaaren's Kakes, but I can also be creative with cookies, can't I? I purchased some football cookie cutters on clearance for $2 at Wal-Mart and thought I'd give them a go. I am having fun with cookies.

Fighting Away 40; 40th Birthday Cake

My coworker Jose turned 40 on the 13th of January, so I decided to make him a cake to honor this momentous occasion.

After some coloring and sculpting of gum paste, voila!

He thought it was funny and his wife and kids thought it was hysterical and teased him.

Hello Kitty Again

Our daughter is a little Hello Kitty obsessed lately. She has also been excited about the fact that her birthday is less than 3 months away. Naturally, it's going to be a Hello Kitty-themed party. I Googled and found SO many cute designs, but she wants a specific one.

Cutting out the oval shaped head using a pattern found on-line.

Isabel decided Hello Kitty needed to be watching me, so she put her on the counter. You can see that I was attempting the frozen buttercream transfer. Yea...an hour in the freezer and it still didn't work.

Here I am using my new turning, tilting turntable. Merry Christmas to me!

Ta Da! I had to hand-draw the eyes and nose, because the frozen buttercream did NOT freeze, even after an hour. I might just do the eyes, nose and bow out of fondant for the party. I did like my icing. Not super-duper smooth, but nice enough.

WHOOPS! Almost forgot the whiskers. Here we go. All better.
